Matilda the musical, based on the book written by Roald Dahl, follows Matilda, a girl with incredible intelligence who’s looked down on by everyone in her life. When she meets the supportive and nurturing Ms. Honey, she discovers she has telepathic powers which she uses to free the students from the tyrannical headmaster, Miss Trunchbull. The director asked for a more austere design to accentuate the brutal treatment of Matilda and her classmates while maintaining the colorful looks that the company was used to. My design achieved this primarily by focusing the front light at steeper angles to create grim eye shadows, creating strong systems of colored backlight and blanketing scenes in hard edged gobos.
