During the pandemic, the Harris Center sprouted with magical wildlife as the staff and crew trapped inside devolved into the woodland creatures of “A Midsummer Nights Dream.” Every performance was shot live in all parts of the building (lobby, scene shop, catwalks, etc.) and streamed over two flatscreens to the audience that sat onstage. The director wanted the design to combine elements of an abandoned overgrown building and a magical forest. My design achieved this primarily by painting different parts of the building with saturated uplight, hanging an assortment of old lightbulbs over the house to create a starry night sky, and lighting the actors almost exclusively with side booms to give the live audience an immersive theatre experience.
