  • “Rent” by Jonathan Larson is a musical about a group of people in New York City, about half of whom have AIDs. The show tracks the individual struggles of each character as they learn to measure the little time they have left not in days or weeks, but in love. The director requested from the design departments a rock concert look for the show. My design achieved this primarily through exposing the fixtures on the electrics, hanging a par wall from 20’ tail downs on an upstage electric, and filling the bigger numbers with flashy cues and moving effects. I also contrasted the stark cool tones from back light and side light when characters had to deal with their real world problems with warmer, more colorful tones from uplight, top light and front light when the characters found comfort in being able to express their less than conventional personalities with each other
